General Secretary of Canada Soccer
Peter Montopoli is the eleventh General Secretary of Canada Soccer, overseeing the organisation’s incredible growth since 2008. Through his leadership, Canada Soccer has strengthened the professional soccer landscape for both men and women as well as set attendance records for national team and international competitions.
Montopoli oversaw the staging of the extremely successful FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ in the capacity of CEO for the National Organising Committee. The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ saw Canadian and FIFA attendance records set with over 1.35M cumulative spectators, the largest attended FIFA competition outside of the FIFA World Cup. The competition garnered 750M global television viewers and generated nearly $500M in economic impact.
Montopoli has served on the CONCACAF Competitions Committee, Administrative Panel Committee, Security/Fair Play Committee, and Women’s Championship Committee. He served as an Assistant General Coordinator at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ and General Coordinator at both the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ in Rustenburg.
In Canada, he served as the National Event Director for the highly successful FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007, drawing a then record 1.2M cumulative spectators. He also served as CEO for the National Organising Committee of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014. Before his career in soccer, he served as Chief Marketing Officer of Skate Canada, helping the 2001 World Figure Skating Championships draw a record 215,000 spectators.
